Raashi Kulkarni and Jongnic Bontemps discuss blending their influences and musical styles to create a multifaceted score for World’s Best.
The musical film World’s Best tells the story of a middle school student caught between his two loves: math and hip-hop. World’s Best is a bittersweet story at its core, with its protagonist Prem Patel using music to connect to his late father, who is played by Utkarsh Ambudkar. Ambudkar, a rapper and singer himself, also co-wrote and produced the film.
Raashi Kulkarni & Jongnic Bontemps On World’s Best Screen Rant: The score for this film seems like the perfect blend of what you both do. How did you come together for this project, and how long did it take for you two to figure out how to best mesh your musical styles? Jongnic Bontemps: No. So, the songs were done with Utkarsh and two songwriters, and they had to be done way before they started filming. By the time we were brought on to the project, the songs were done; we were able to listen to the songs when we were talking with the director and the producers about things, so we got a sense of where it was fitting. The wonderful thing is that Raashi was the first composer hired for this film.
That's one thing that I think is kind of unique to our collaboration; we really do write on each other's things. I've been on other collaborations where it's like, "You take these cues, I'll take these cues," and that's really it. With us, I'll write a cue and I'll send it to Raashi, who will then open up the cue in her system and make changes and update things. She'll send stuff to me, and vice versa.
One thing that we did do is in the very beginning; the opening sequence is the Mathlympics. Since the film doesn't start with a song--it starts with score--I took the synth stem from the song "World's Best" and made that the motif. We wanted there to be cohesion between song and score, so that was one way of paying respect to the song. The song is called "World's Best", so we're starting the film with "World's Best". We did things like that.
