B-Corp certified Havas has caused outrage among environmental activists after announcing recently it has started working with Shell
Firms that have fossil fuel clients such as Shell risk not only their accreditation but the wrath of environmentalists B Corp certification, which claims to endorse any firm as fundamentally ethical and responsible, has become a big deal in the business world in the past five years, with many advertising and PR agencies vaunting theirBut the movement has been thrown into a new realm of controversy after B Corp-certified marketing giant Havas started working for the fossil fuel behemoth Shell.
More recently, in this age of corporate purpose and ESG, advisory firms have queued up to prove their own ethical credentials, which they believe will help them to win business and attract employees. So when the news broke recently that Havas had won Shell’s global media buying account, environmental campaigners were outraged. How could Havas claim to be “a force for good” when it was working with one of the world’s biggest fossil fuel firms and polluters, they said.
Specifically, the letter asks B Lab to apply the same criteria that are used for fossil fuel and high polluting companies to the ad and PR agencies who work with those clients.
