The cost of living in the islands has created a shortage of waiters, cleaners and other tourism staff, tourist chiefs say

Renting in Mallorca pictured, Ibiza and Menorca costs almost half of household incomes may be blissfully unaware that for many Spaniards who work in the tourist industry, simply paying rent is a struggle.Some workers are forced to sleep in their cars. National police units, which are based on the mainland, struggle to afford to mount long-term operations in the islands because officers receive daily expenses of €40 per person but most hotels are at least €100 per night.

The housing crisis comes after a 204 per cent rise in legal tourist rental accommodation in the past ten years, according to regional government figures, and a 7 per cent increase in hotel rooms, according to the Mallorca Federation of Hoteliers. The illegal rental market is thought to be huge.“Access to housing is the principal problem in the Balearic Islands.

She said there would be no growth in tourist accommodation on the islands, one of the top holiday destinations in Spain for Britons.
