Waiters can't afford what they serve and supermarket staff can't afford what they put on shelves
Waiters can’t afford what they serve and supermarket staff can’t afford what they put on shelvesFrances O’Grady joins workers who are striking for better working conditions and union recognition Everything is going up but pay. Every worker should be able to afford a decent standard of living – especially in one of the richest countries in the world – but millions of low-paid workers live month to month, wage packet to wage packet.
That’s why the TUC is today setting out a roadmap to a £15 minimum wage – as part of building a high wage economy for everyone. Unions are already fighting for this in workplaces up and down the country, but we need government action to get there too and understand how game-changing this would be for the living standards of the lowest paid.First, the Government has to up its ambition. Since the minimum wage was first introduced, its value has increased over time.
– and the next logical step is to be ambitious and make the minimum wage worth 75 per cent of median wages. After all, the evidence is clear. We can afford higher wages. After 23 years of the minimum wage, firms are still making profits and increasing the numbers of people employed. Plus we have a trusted body in the Low Pay Commission – made up of unions, business and independent experts. They keep an eye on the prevailing economic circumstances, so we can safely ratchet up the level of the minimum wage without worry.
Once we’ve set the target for the minimum wage at 75 per cent, next we need to get all wages rising – and end the longest and harshest wage squeeze in 200 years.
