Women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) - a severe and debilitating form of PMS - say they are being 'bounced' between NHS departments for years

Women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder – a severe and debilitating form of PMS – say they are being ‘bounced’ between NHS departments for yearsWomen with a severe form of premenstrual syndrome – called premenstrual dysphoric disorder – have been “dropping through the cracks” in the

In a meeting with the committee last week, TV personality Vicky Pattison revealed that she was left feeling “stupid and ashamed” after doctors repeatedly dismissed her period disorder, leaving her with “crippling anxiety”, insomnia and fatigue throughout her 20s. Research by IAMPD found that 72 per cent of people with PMDD reported thoughts of suicide at some point in their lives and 34 per cent of sufferers have attempted to take their own life at some point. This is much higher than the general population, where around three per cent have attempted suicide, the report found.

“We hope that by highlighting menstrual health in the Women’s Health Strategy, there will be more research to improve understanding of menstrual health conditions like PMDD and gynaecological conditions.”Croía Reilly, 48, waited over three decades for a PMDD diagnosis “There were some moments where I got so down that I thought about suicide,” she said. “I never thought I would do it. But I actually thought I didn’t want to be alive anymore.”

She has been on anti-depressants “on and off”, but she was eventually referred to a gynaecologist as she could no longer cope. She said: “Gynaecologists, understandably, are not comfortable in treating someone who is suicidal and having suicidal ideation, they feel out of their depth. Psychiatrists are not always comfortable treating things related to hormones and hormone sensitivities.

Dr Panay added: “While PMDD is a woman’s health condition, it should have multidisciplinary management from primary care, gynaecology and psychological or psychiatric services to ensure that women are able to access the care they need.”said the NHS needs more clinicians specialising in premenstrual syndromes and GPs need more training in what symptoms to look out for.
