Many women or femme people have inattentive ADHD, which means that a lot of the time, the only obvious or visible traits of ADHD are disorganisation, forgetfulness, doodling and struggling to concentrate. These traits match very closely with the characteristics of the stereotypes that we’ve been taught of a “ditzy blonde” or a “girl who is away with the fairies”.
This is the case for all autistic folks, but the danger becomes twofold for women and people marginalised for their gender, who are already considerably more likely to experience repeated and severe forms of abuse, including sexual violence. This is one of the things that I worry about most when it comes to the late diagnosis of autistic girls and non-binary people because I know just how lucky I am to have narrowly avoided events even more traumatic than the ones I experienced.
