Both Manchester United and City have gone unbeaten in the Women's Super League, with City sitting at the top of the table. City's Lauren Hemp is nominated for the Goal of the Month award.
As the month draws to a close, we get the luxury to look back on all the Women’s Super League action - the goals, the triumphs and the shortfalls of what’s been a pretty hectic season-opening month.
Hemp’s was the first goal for the 2023/24 campaign for the Sky Blues, in their opening day 2-0 win over West Ham. Her 48th-minute outside-the-box effort bent around the keeper and flew directly into the top left corner stunning the 23,000-strong crowd - to be fair, it was coming as City had piled on the pressure.
And then there's Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw's second goal nodded beyond Kaylan Marckese in the 5-0 thrashing of Bristol City. Okay, nothing overly spectacular, it was her second-headed finish in the game... Maybe it's the right-back in me bubbling to the surface but I'm a sucker for a team goal. The forward picks up the through ball from Hinata Miyazawa, beats three pink shirts for pace and taps the ball beyond Sabrina D'Angelo. Another 'keeper who had a poor performance that night may have given the French international a chance at GOTM glory.
Lacasse’s edge-of-the-box strike against United flew beyond Mary Earp’s reach into the top left corner. Palmer’s and Summanen’s were both very much the same - except the latter was a set piece. McCabe managed to hit the target despite running away from goal again from outside the box and Thomas provided such filth of a finish to punish van Domselaar once more. So who am I to argue?
