Women are underrepresented in LAPD’s higher ranks
Women remain underrepresented among the higher ranks of the Los Angeles Police Department, according to an LAPD report.
But just 13.1% of captains and commanders in the LAPD are women, down from 18.9% last year. The percentage of women in the department overall has remained around 18% since 2018, according to the LAPD’s data. Police commissioners, at their Tuesday, Aug. 16 meeting, expressed concern that the data didn’t indicate the difficulties women may face in trying to get promoted.
In the report, Police Chief Michel Moore said that while data indicate an increase in the promotion rate for women over the last four years, “what cannot be determined from the data are the underlying reasons for the observed historical underrepresentation of female personnel in high-ranking positions.
