Stunning images were shared of the skies above Merseyside

According to one weather agency, an “extreme” geomagnetic storm caused the lights, also known as the Aurora borealis, to be far more visible than usual. At around 11pm last night, many took to the streets and shared pictures of the amazing night sky across the UK.

One of these was Claire Bland, who saw the aurora in Huyton. She spotted what she thought was a Liver Bird in the dazzling colours.READ MORE:Furious mum claims Uber Eats driver 'stole' her Asda shoppingThere were sightings across Merseyside, including in Crosby where ECHO photographer Colin Lane captured amazing images of the lights above the beach. Upon seeing the Aurora, Colin said: "It's mega guys, what a night...insane colours.

Stephen Dixon, a spokesperson for the Met Office, said the lights could be visible tonight too. Speaking on Friday, he said: “Although the shorter nights will limit the visibility window, there’s a good chance to see the aurora, particularly on Friday night and especially in Scotland, Ireland and parts of northern England and Wales.“Those conditions could continue on Saturday night but we still have to work out some details on where exactly that will be.
