Brittany Kowalchuk, 25, lost control of her car on Interstate 81 in Cumberland County.
Brittany Anne Kowalchuk, 25, of Miller’s Place, N.Y., entered her plea before Judge Albert Masland Tuesday. Nicholas J. Scott, a passenger in Kowalchuk’s car who she told police was her boyfriend, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash near Quarry Hill Road in Penn Township.In exchange for Kowalchuk’s plea, prosecutors agreed to drop additional counts this week, including a homicide by vehicle while under the influence charge that carried a three-year mandatory minimum prison term.
In their investigation, police said they found evidence Kowalchuk had been engaged in a text message thread in the moments leading up to the crash. Charging documents stated her phone showed one text that had just been sent, stating “yea driving call later,’ and a second unsent text stating, ‘ty.’
