Wizards of the Coast, Hasbro's label that handles the Dungeons & Dragons and Magic: The Gathering franchises, has cancelled"at least" five video game projects due to a change in strategy.
At least five video game projects have been cancelled by Wizards of the Coast, whose most recent release was 2021'sAs reported by, a number of studios have been affected — Otherside Entertainment and Hidden Path Entertainment have been named — and less than 15 people will lose their jobs at Wizards of the Coast due to change but will be able to apply for other roles within the company.
Alongside the five cancelled video games, two other external games have been dropped, as well as an internal project codenamed Jabberwocky. The upcoming Baldurs Gate 3 game from Larian Studios seemingly remains unaffected, which comes as no surprise, as it's a popular Dungeons & Dragons IP, but we're yet to hear about New Raleigh-Durham Studio's G.I JOE game, which was announced in 2021.
The last few years have seen Wizards of the Coast expand its plans for video games, leading to the company forming new studios and creating partnerships with independent developers, but last year, Hasbro Inc. saw a 40% drop in its share prices. The resulting factor led to toy sales increasing due to the higher prices, and for a company that is structured around toys and boardgames, it comes as no surprise that a shift in strategy would affect its video game arm first.
