Philly succeeds in promoting its parks this way thanks in part to a strong mix of regional and neighborhood parks, plus several destination parks and what Wilken says is the strongest network of friends groups in the country. “We have to expose these hidden gems,” he says. “Public space is the key to living in the city. Shared resources are efficient resources … we’re getting people to look at spaces in a new way.”
“This is a circus,” he says. “A food trailer, beer trailer, pump truck for the bathrooms, furniture and seating for 300 people, staff preparing the food … We move every Monday and open every Wednesday. It’s similar to striking a carnival.”
