Why aren’t more people running for open city council seats in Danville and Lafayette?
Instead, when voters in Lafayette and Danville start filling out boxes for state, regional and federal elections, they won’t need to decide on any city races or ballot measures.
Lafayette will save between $38,000 to $57,000 — the cost of processing ballots for the roughly 19,000 registered voters there. Danville expects to avoid anywhere from $64,000 to $96,000 in costs. Canceling elections is not uncommon for smaller Bay Area cities. Lafayette has done it six other times in the past three decades — including similarly holding no election at all in 1993 and 2014.
Still, the absence of local political involvement in these cities belies a surge in activism across the Bay Area in recent years, guided by impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, racial justice movements and an urgent push for more housing in California.
