New Jersey voters express a mix of support and resignation as they’re again asked whether scandal-plagued Sen. Bob Menendez (D) should return to Washington.
“Being a senator is a full-time job and being a defendant is a full-time job in a way,” she said on a pedestrian walkway in downtown Jersey City. “It’s hard to do both.”Menendez, who has been serving in Congress for 30 years, is facing calls for his resignation among many of his Democratic colleagues after aThe Democrat has said his political future should be decided by New Jersey voters, not politicians taking advantage of his indictment for political gain.
“He should save whatever is left of his reputation and leave office,” said Mary Ann Assiff of Bloomfield, New Jersey, where Menendez won 54 percent of the vote in 2018. “I voted for him last time just to make sure the Democrats kept the seat but we need to get someone new in his place.”, than his political fate, pointing to the gold bars authorities said they found at the home of Menendez and his wife.
Since the indictment was unveiled last week, Menendez has leaned into his Latino heritage for support, suggesting that the investigation into his actions could have been tainted by racial bias. In a statement released soon after the charges were announced, Menendez said that it was “not lost” on him “how quickly some are rushing to judge a Latino and push him out of his seat.
In Miami, where Menéndez has been known as “Florida’s third senator” because of his close ties with some Cuban American power brokers, the reaction to his indictment has been mostly tepid.“If he did what they said, he should go,” said Issac Duarte, 25, standing outside a “Calle Ocho” barbershop in the city’s Little Havana neighborhood.
