Even a couple decades before the pandemic, which greatly impacted all institutions where people go to gather, national surveys revealed significant drops in church attendance as society became more secular and fewer Americans identified with any one denomination.

In 1999, a Gallup poll showed 70% of U.S. adults attended services regularly. In 2018 that dropped to 50%, and three years later was down to 47%. So it should come as no surprise there have been a number of church closings in the area, as well as some surprising mergers.

Its mission - to become more inclusive and a resource for the needs of a diverse community. Which makes sense. While churches will always be a place of worship, Jesus did not spend a lot of time inside a synagogue when he walked the Earth, but rather went directly to the people, as he instructed his apostles to do.

“It means knocking on doors, sending out flyers, doing what it takes to let people know you are here,” he said. “You can go by a church a million times on your way to and from work and not even know it is there.” Meyer, a self-described Gen Xer who joined St. Olaf in 2015, immediately became active in its leadership, along with her husband, because the “people are so warm here … it is so much like family.”Even its preschool, vibrant for 21 years, ceased to exist this year, in part because of the aging demographics of the congregation. So the question becomes, “who is the next group coming through the doors that will bring new life to it?” Meyer asked. The Rev.

That’s why he and Council President Dan Britton have been going door to door, handing out flyers about the upcoming celebration. Britton predicts by the time the anniversary rolls around next month, between 750 to 1,000 of these invitations will have gone out.
