“I am pleased with how I have been playing this year, but the huge scores weren’t happening.”
In first-class cricket for India, the opening batsman from Mumbai, Prithvi Shaw scored the second-highest total.from where he had left off on Tuesday to destroy the Assam bowlers and, in the process, become the second-highest scorer for India in first-class cricket.
The 23-year-old opener’s 379 runs came off 383 balls as Mumbai declared their innings at 687 for four on Day Two of their Elite Group B Ranji Trophy encounter at the Amingaon Cricket Club on Wednesday. With captain Ajinkya Rahane, who struck 191 off 302 balls, Shaw contributed to a 401-run third-wicket partnership. At stumps, Assam had scored 129 runs but was still down by 558 runs.
The highest first-class score by an Indian still stands at 443, recorded by Bhausaheb Nimbalkar for Maharashtra versus Kathiawar in the opening round of the Ranji Trophy in December 1948 at Poona Club. Sanjay Manjrekar was Mumbai’s leading scorer in the Ranji Trophy until Shaw’s quick-fire knock allowed him to pass him.Manjrekar defeated Hyderabad in the semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in April 1991, scoring 377 in 473 balls.
He continued by saying that he was a little unhappy that he fell short of the 400-point barrier. “I had nothing to work with. I didn’t realize my batting average was 200. I didn’t have the goal of reaching 400 in mind, but I did consider continuing to play as long as I could. Although the umpire’s ruling didn’t favour me either, things like this do happen in sports,” added Shaw.
Hopefully, Shaw will turn his attention back to cricket after this inning. “People who don’t know me but yet comment negatively about me. I have never given a back answer since I dislike doing so. I am aware of what I must do to become a better player, Shaw remarked.
