Purdue suffers its second straight loss in heartbreaking fashion.
Chucky Hepburn's 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds to play gave Wisconsin a piece of the Big Ten championship on Tuesday night at the Kohl Center, posting a 70-67 victory. Jaden Ivey had tied the game with a 3-pointer with 8.9 seconds. Purdue was just 11 of 20 from the line, including 3 of 8 in the first half, but kept missing crucial ones after halftime. The Boilermakers rallied from an 11-point deficit to take a brief lead and pulled within one point twice in the final 1:42 as Ivey took over.
Ivey scored 17 of his 22 points in the second half. Zach Edey also added 14 points in the second half and finished with 17. Johnny Davis, who scored 37 at Mackey Arena earlier this season, banked in a 3-pointer with 25.7 seconds to extend Wisconsin's lead to 67-64. Tyler Wahl was a big difference for the Badgers, scoring 19 points. The regular-season Big Ten championship dreams ended Tuesday night. The Badgers clinched at least a share of the title and the Boilermakers will try to finish second but will likely need help and a victory over Indiana on Sunday.
The Boilermakers were sharp early but weren’t sharp late in the first half. Unforced turnovers and poor shooting allowed the Badgers to rally from a seven-point deficit and take control with a 10-run. It was part of a bigger run for Wisconsin, outscoring Purdue 17-6 during a seven-minute stretch. Chucky Hepburn was the main reason as the freshman scored 11 points in the first half. Johnny Davis was just 1 of 5 shooting but made 4-for-4 from the line and Tyler Wahl was a factor inside.
