Will new Texas Senate measure break the property tax logjam? | Opinion
The regular legislative session began with a promise that the GOP leadership in Austin would deliver property tax reform to homeowners who otherwise are being taxed out of homes. Instead, the debate broke down into political absolutes, with Abbott touting the totally unwieldy notion that the state should eliminate the property tax, a position that would skyrocket the sales tax burden of all Texans.
All Texans should be frustrated that this impasse now requires lawmakers to hold additional special sessions this year to work out things that were at the top of the state’s to-do list and should have been resolved during the regular session. Instead, we are witnessing an abysmal lack of leadership and hostage-taking that elevates political egos and bragging rights over essential state business.
This acrimony burst into public view when the House delivered a take-it-or-leave-it ultimatum to the Senate before abruptly shutting down. But this really is a bare-knuckled, political showdown among the state’s top GOP leaders that continues to perplex school districts and homeowners. This newspaper believes that a compromise can be found in a plan that would expand the homestead exemption and also give school districts state money to help them reduce their tax rates. However, the infighting between Abbott and Patrick is so unnecessarily personal that at times they seem more willing to inflict collateral damage than find a compromise that would deliver tax relief to homeowners.
