Will County sheriff Deputy Edward Goewey was sentenced to 12 months court supervision and a $750 fine following a disorderly conduct conviction for a Dec. 3, 2021 incident at a Mokena Catholic school.

Will County sheriff Deputy Edward Goewey testifies in August that he was concerned a potential violent threat a student made at St. Mary School in December 2021, was taken lightly, and said he was imploring staff to act on it.

Goewey’s attorney, Bob Bodach, said the sentencing was close to what the defense requested, which included an appropriate amount of court supervision and minimal fine. Brian Koch talked about how Goewey defused a tense situation at a St. Mary’s basketball game because a parent was angry at the referees. He escorted the angry parent outside and then later accompanied the referees to their car, he said.

“Had this gone another way, we could have called Deputy Goewey a hero,” she said. “We don’t have the luxury of living in Mayberry anymore.”Advertisement Judge Barrett said he considered the character witnesses’ testimony and written statements as well as the information discussed during the trial when deciding on the sentence. He said Goewey was “exceptionally kind, patient and respectful” during the court proceedings and he said he recognized that he cannot quit being a police officer.
