The Will County Board is moving forward with demolishing the vacant courthouse in downtown Joliet while area preservation groups are working to save the building.

The Will County Board is moving forward with plans to demolish the old courthouse in Joliet, though preservation groups are still fighting to save the building.

Despite the county’s intentions to raze the building, Landmarks Illinois and the Joliet-based Courthouse Preservation Partnership are hoping they can change officials’ minds. In the request, it asks for developers’ or architects’ visions, potential partners and potential funding sources. Ideas for reusing the building include a boutique hotel or apartments or condominium units located above a first floor dedicated to commercial development, Adamowski said.

Landmarks Illinois and the Courthouse Preservation Partnership plan to provide the county the responses from developers as early as April as a way to encourage the county to issue an official request for redevelopment proposal, Adamowski said.“How can it be harmful to explore whether or not there are redevelopment options,” Adamowski said.

One of the possibilities in a proposal for reuse of the former Will County Courthouse was for a rooftop bar in the downtown Joliet building. Though the county’s legal department said the land is only allowed for public use, the firm Neal and Leroy, LLC issued Courthouse Preservation Partnership an opinion last year saying otherwise.
