The announcement of an app store for the AI chat interface reveals the scale of OpenAI’s ambitions.
OpenAI described this rollout, in muted terms, as just another step in its gradual “iterative deployment philosophy.” This is a bit of an understatement, and nobody in tech mistook it as accurate. ChatGPT already has more than 100 million users, according to the company. Now it has an app store. It can act, in some ways, like an operating system.
ChatGPT put on a great show and effectively inculcated a sense of potential about LLMs — and itself and its parent company — in its users. It could do a lot of things for you, but it couldn’t do many things on your behalf. It was, literally, just another web app in a tab in your browser. With plug-ins, it now hasCurrently, the list of apps available to use through ChatGPT, on an invite-only basis, is small.
OpenAI isn’t the first company to try to get its users to use chat instead of buttons, search boxes, and menus, but previous attempts to retrofit popular U.S. services with conversational interfaces haven’t gone well. Granted, previous chatbots were comparatively primitive.
