“Métier is designed for people who have plenty to say and nothing to prove,” says founder Melissa Morris.

Métier founder Melissa Morris won us over when she told us that her handbags are designed to be a safe port in the storm of life. “A bag should be hard-working, not hard work!” once said the designer, who cut her teeth at Armani and Helmut Lang before going it alone. Now in its fifth year, Métier has become something of a stalwartTo celebrate the brand’s birthday, Morris invited Métier friends to the Cotswolds for a quintessentially British summer’s evening.

“Métier is designed for people who have plenty to say and nothing to prove,” according to the designer. As guests danced under the stars in the wild gardens filled with poppies, it was the perfect setting for a brand which is decidedly unstuffy, but undeniably covetable. Here, Gabrielle and Morris reflect on a night to remember and how five years in the business has shaped Métier.

You launched the business with a store first, which was unconventional. How do you feel about that decision now? Truly, it was the best decision we have ever made. The store has been such an important anchor for us. It is the heart and soul of our brand. For me, luxury is not just about a perfected product, but the entire world that envelops it. We are obsessed with our clients’ experience and how we can make it as seamless and personal as possible. The store is designed for you to walk inside and feel as inspired as you do at home. To me, that is the hallmark of elegance.

I don’t necessarily think so, but it’s definitely key to what I believe is elegant. I have always wanted to create pieces for people who have enough to say on their own and don’t need their products to do the talking for them. It’s like when you see a perfectly tailored white shirt on a really confident, beautiful woman. The shirt itself doesn’t have a logo, but she just oozes sophistication and glamour. I think accessories can do the same thing.
