Whyte: Neither DeBerry nor Sakai are particularly partisan, and both are hardworking and compassionate people, but one clearly has a vision.
Former Bexar County Commissioner Trish DeBerry has a bold vision that would serve her well as the next county judge. The race to replace retiring Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff has hit the home stretch. The Express-News Editorial BoardI have known Sakai and his Republican opponent, Trish DeBerry, for many years. Sakai is a man of honor and integrity who served Bexar County well as a district court judge for 26 years. Sakai has been heavily involved in advocating for disadvantaged children.
In other words, this is the top job. It’s the job that allows a leader with vision to bring folks together, and take our city and our county to the next level. That’s why I believe the Express-News recommendation makes little sense. When I’m looking for a leader, one of the most important qualities I look for is vision. Combine great vision with an aptitude for economic development, and now you’re talking.
In the Express-News recommendation, there was only one new, economic policy proposal mentioned — DeBerry’s idea to move the jail out of the West Side, which may boost economic development and improve the criminal justice system. That’s the type of out-of-the-box thinking San Antonio needs to continue to thrive.
