VFX artists with the Corridor Crew explain why the sometimes janky CGI in David Lynch's Twin Peaks: The Return still works so well.

A team of VFX artists breaks down why the CGI in Twin Peaks: The Return is surprisingly effective. Twin Peaks was a mystery series created by David Lynch and Mark Frost. It first debuted in 1990 and became a national phenomenon shortly after, maintaining cult status in the three decades since its release. The original run only lasted two seasons, but the show returned in 2017 with Twin Peaks: The Return, an eighteen-episode supplement that marked a distinct departure from the first two seasons.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The Corridor Crew, a Youtube channel dedicated to exploring all things film and television production, shared their analysis in a recent video called VFX Artists React to Bad & Great CGI 88. The crew explains the surprising success of the CGI techniques Lynch used in The Return, touching on how the sometimes-rudimentary, sometimes-polished effects have thought and purpose behind them.

"The janky effects are still evoking a very strong emotional response, and when that happens it's no longer just a janky effect. It's doing something. There's art to the janky-ness. When it comes to David Lynch I can't help but feel like that's intentional because of how it makes people react."How Twin Peaks: The Return Avoided CGI Criticism Marvel Currently Faces Lynch has never been accused of typicality.

Twin Peaks: The Return is his latest project. It hit streaming in 2017, at the height of the Marvel Cinematic Universe craze, and provided viewers with a stark contrast to the popcorn films prevalent at that time. Part of that contrast was the employment of CGI.

Twin Peaks: The Return runs the gamut of digital effects. There is the rather traditional nuclear explosion in "Part 8", which was discussed by the Corridor Crew. But then there are the more outlandish effects: demon entities hiding behind human faces, FBI agents being sucked into nether realms by tornado-like occurrences, spirits trapped in electrified brain trees, and a whole host of other digital happenings that seem only possible in dreams.
