TurningRed star Sandra Oh explains why she wanted to be in Pixar's new movie: 'The thing that grabbed me was there's an entire film focused on the inner life of a 13-year-old girl.'
Turning Red star Sandra Oh explains why she was interested in joining Pixar's new movie. The Golden Globe-winning actress voices Ming Lee, the mother of main character Meilin"Mei" Lee, voiced by Rosalie Chiang. Early reviews for Turning Red have already been positive, with critics commenting on its heartfelt story and praising Oh and Chiang for their voice acting.
The latest animated feature from Disney and Pixar is written and directed by Domee Shi, best known for her 2018 Pixar short film Bao which won her the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film. Turning Red centers around Mei Lee, a Chinese-Canadian teenager from Toronto who turns into a giant red panda whenever she gets excited or stressed out.
"The thing that grabbed me was there's an entire film focused on the inner life of a 13-year-old girl. And that perspective, directed from that perspective, written from that perspective was something I really wanted to be a part of. And then, you know, how I could help out as Ming is to also explore the very tender and difficult and fraught time that we all have, all of us have with our mothers. And to kind of bring as much humanity and humor to Ming as possible.
Pixar has featured female leads in the past , but Turning Red promises to be a unique entry in the studio's storied filmography. Based on the early buzz, it doesn't shy away from the more sensitive topics of its subject matter, which should help it feel refreshing. It's easy to understand why Oh found the project so appealing, and it's clear she was committed to delivering a poignant performance.
Even with Turning Red skipping theaters, there is plenty to look forward to with the film. Pixar's films have always been able to reach not only children, but adults who understand the trials and tribulations of growing up. It's no surprise that this is what drew Sandra Oh to Turning Red. Her performance, as well as the whole cast's, already sound promising and the premise sounds both inventive and humorous.
