There's currently fierce debate about who's responsible for instructing them: teachers or parents? The poll of 1,000 parents of reception-age children found that only 50 per cent thought they had sole responsibility for toilet training their child — and one in five parents think children don't need to be out of nappies before starting primary school.

Some might argue that parents have managed without this guidance for generations, but these are unprecedented times. The ramifications of the pandemic, shortage of health care visitors who traditionally offered this advice and overworked parents means too many children are simply not getting consistent potty training.
