Rapidly changing weather conditions, slippery trails and unprepared hikers can be a disastrous combination — and that’s when the Kauai Fire Department is called to the rescue.
This year, there have already been 13 rescues, including nine that required Air 1, the Kauai Fire Department’s helicopter. Last year, there were 125 land rescues, including 63 by air. “Injuries and exhaustion often lead to hiking rescues on Kauai,” Kauai Fire Department Chief Steven Goble told SFGATE. “Accidents happen, and those are at times unpredictable.”
This month, an injured 56-year-old hiker from California was rescued near a waterfall about 4 miles in on the Kalalau Trail. A few days earlier, an injured 53-year-old hiker from Utah was rescued near a waterfall in the town of Kapaa after jumping off a rope swing. Both were rescued using Air 1.accounts for the highest number of rescues, with six incidents so far this year, compared to 24 last year.
