Why picking up Baker Mayfield doesn't make much sense, even for QB-needy Texans
. Allen has turned the ball over five times in two starts, including three turnovers that became defensive touchdowns.But when asked Monday whether Mayfield, the first overall pick in the 2018 draft by the Browns, was a realistic option for the Texans, coach Lovie Smith seemed to express some doubt in that possibility. He said they hadn’t looked into it.
“Don’t know enough about Baker or anything like that. We’re trying to get better play from the guys we have on our current roster.”When the Texans review the film on how Mayfield played this season, they might think twice about it. After his last performance against the Ravens two weeks ago, he was made the third-string quarterback behind Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker.
But signing Mayfield for five games doesn’t really make much sense for the Texans. Mayfield does have an expiring contract, but he’d likely want a new deal and an opportunity to show he can still play.
