OpEd: 'If we as young people want something done right, we have to do it ourselves.'
Operation REDMAP was a smashing success. As a result of massive down-ballot spending, Republicans also swept local offices from school boards to city councils. The 113th Congress, elected in 2012, then expanded the GOP majority, despite congressional Democrats. Basically, Republicans hijacked our democracy.
We’re still living with the consequences of Operation REDMAP and the massive investment in legislative races. Rumors abound thatby cracking the Kansas City area between three mostly rural congressional districts to further put the thumb on the scale for congressional Republicans. This is especially true due to the failure of Congress and the Supreme Court to impose limits on partisan gerrymandering. In 2019, the highest court in the land ruled that it could not weigh in on whether North Carolina Republicans had drawn maps that gave them an extreme advantage in the state legislature.We conclude that partisan gerrymandering claims present political questions beyond the reach of the federal courts.
Here in St. Louis County, I will be the youngest person ever appointed to help redraw our seven council districts. The county executive appoints one Democrat and one Republican from each of the districts to work on this process. A map needs 9 votes of the 14 members to win approval. But for the past 30 years,, and the parties have filed lawsuits, leaving the courts to determine the final shape of the maps.
