: How can we create space to express emotion in times that are so heavy with grief? Hope seems to be the popular feeling people are grasping for, but how do we create space for the messiness of it all?We need to talk about it and do so without apology, and resist pushes to create a tidier and more simple narrative. Because I think resisting difficult narratives is what got us into this place, and so we have to stop that.
I started as a lawyer being very interested in addressing laws that discriminated against women, there were a lot of laws in Ireland at the time that discriminated. I wasn’t keen to describe myself as a feminist because I thought it might marginalize me as a lawyer. As I got older, I realized that was not enough. I needed to address being a feminist, and when I was elected president I made it clear that I was keen to do the job better precisely because I was woman.
Climate change is a man made problem and requires a feminist solution. It’s corporations of men who have been most responsible. I was very surprised and angry when I started going to conferences on climate [because] it is such a male-dominated world that never mentioned issues on gender rights. That’s why we formed a network of women leaders on gender and climate.
