Why did flooding happen in Norfolk and Suffolk despite it being in the process of drought recovery?

Just a few weeks ago most of East Anglia was recovering from drought while September ushered in a heatwave. Why then did vast swathes of the area end up so badly flooded that families had to take refuge in leisure centres?

In Framlingham, one of the worst-hit towns in which about 70 homes were affected, a herd of 17 cows was saved from drowning by members of the public, while in Wickham Market farmers used tractors to get through flood water and rescue people trapped in their homes. As of last Thursday, Suffolk's total rainfall during October 2023 was 117.

That is more than three times its average for the month, beating the previous record of 138mm set in 1960 .Simon O'Brien pulling people to safety in Debenham in his homemade paddleboat "We did see rivers burst their banks, but also where we had compacted soil in big agricultural areas, that water rushes straight off," she says.An aerial view shows how bad the flooding was in Framlingham

Asked why some places, such as the village of Debenham, were particularly badly hit, Prof Hiscox suggests storm cells play a role.

Why Daylight Saving Time is a Pointless TraditionWhy Daylight Saving Time is a Pointless TraditionDaylight Saving Time (DST) is an outdated practice that steals precious evening light and serves no real purpose. It was originally implemented in 1916 to save energy but has since become a burden. The author shares their personal experience of ignoring DST and sticking to British Summer Time (BST) instead. They argue that DST is a decision, not based in nature, and it's time to reconsider its relevance in modern society.
