as the Dallas Cowboys have ever had on the defensive side of the football. They have had Mel Renfro, and they have had Randy White and they have had, of course, Bob Lilly, and all those players did Hall of Fame things for many years. So after 18 games, we aren’t anointing Parsons the best, just saying that every play you check to see which tackle he’s lining up against and how the opponent tries to stop his record-setting pass rush.Maybe that sounds as silly as comparing him to Lilly.
The Cowboys consistently kept Joe Mixon in check last week in holding off the pass-first Bengals, but Barkley poses a more dangerous threat. As a rookie in 2018, Barkley finished second only to the Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott in the rushing race, and Barkley had a better average per carry. The Buffalo influence of coach Brian Daboll has definitely arrived in terms of Jones already having run 16 times in two games.
Now I’m not suggesting the Cowboys stick Parsons back at middle linebacker and leave him there. But the key to the game is Dallas’ ability to control Barkley on first and second downs and force the Giants into obvious passing situations. That’s what will free up Parsons to do not so much the thing he does best — that appears to be everything — but the thing he does that is the most debilitating for opponents.
