A townhome project underway in Old East Dallas couldn't hold up to the storms that swept across North Texas over Labor Day weekend.
Construction experts say the homes did not appear to have the proper supports in place to withstand such heavy winds.
The property’s 13 upscale three-bedroom townhomes had been under construction for several months and were still being framed, so they did not have the same supports that completed buildings would to sustain the heavy winds. Carroll said the company will examine every unit of the project for damage and rebuild the destroyed portions. He said he learned of the incident after a neighbor called the construction manager. At that point, crews worked to clean up debris from the street that was a safety hazard.
“There was nothing really to collect and transfer the lateral loads down to the foundation, and it found a point of weakness and then the structure collapsed,” Eubanks said in response to the video. “Structures under construction and completed in this area should be able to sustain winds of 60 miles an hour.”
