Salt Lake City is marking Mexican independence and Hispanic Heritage Month.
City Hall in Salt Lake City is illuminated in the colors of the Mexican flag on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022, to commemorate the 212th anniversary of the Independence of Mexico and to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Are you wondering why Salt Lake City Hall and downtown’s Walker Center are lit up in green, white and red lights?
Well, those are the colors of the Mexican flag, and they are illuminating the 212th anniversary of the nation’s independence, which is celebrated every Sept. 16. Salt Lake City is adorning those buildings Thursday and Friday evenings to join the commemoration and to mark the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15., and there are more than 290,000 people of Mexican origin in the state.
“I’m so grateful to our strong Hispanic communities for all their contributions that make Salt Lake City the vibrant place it is,” Mayor Erin Mendenhall said in a news release. “It’s an honor to celebrate the many ways Hispanic families and businesses add to the beauty and culture of our capital city.”
