Under a draft law, workers in essential sectors would be obliged to continue working even if their trade unions call a strike. Read more at straitstimes.com.
LONDON - With strikes affecting large sectors of the United Kingdom’s economy, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has unveiled plans toUnder a draft law currently debated in the parliament in London, workers in essential sectors such as border control, education, the fire brigade, transport, and health services would be obliged to enter into “minimum levels of service” contracts with their employers, obliging them to continue working even if their trade unions call a strike.
The chief reason the country is hit by the biggest wave of strikes in almost half a century is inflation, which has hovered at around 11 per cent for much of the past year, drastically reducing workers’ purchasing power. By contrast, only an average of 450,000 working days were lost to strikes each month in the current strike wave that started last November,
Since the British state-funded health sector is vast, each 1 per cent rise in salaries across this sector costs the taxpayer a staggering £700 million a year. But the proposed British law aims to be tougher on employees than arrangements in other parts of the continent.
