Bella Hadid’s onslaught of archival looks, from Versace to Tom Ford-era Gucci, will undoubtedly have a trickle-down effect.
In fact, Hadid’s looks show the excitement that opting for vintage can bring. Once it was clear that she was only wearing archival pieces at Cannes, the question became about what piece of fashion history she would step out in next – a much-needed antidote to the desire for constant newness that’s often seen in the fashion industry.Lionel Hahn/Getty Images
Of course, not everyone has the incredible access that Hadid and her collaborator Law Roach have , nor the same red carpet events to attend. But Hadid’s choice to champion vintage at such a high-profile moment on the fashion calendar will undoubtedly have a trickle-down effect, with searches for pre-loved Versace and Tom Ford-era Gucci likely to shoot up in the coming days and weeks.
Brands, too, are likely to take note, with Gucci, Valentino and Jean Paul Gaultier all launching resale in the past year as demand for pre-loved items grows. Embracing new business models such as resale will be crucial for the industry moving forward, given the resources that are needed – and the carbon footprint and waste that’s created – to produce a never-ending amount of brand-new products.
With sustainability in fashion becoming ever more important, the likes of Hadid can have an enormous influence in changing the industry for the better. Here’s hoping there’s more of this to come.
