Director James Cameron reveals that Arnold Schwarzenegger originally wasn’t a fan of being a good terminator in Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Terminator 2: Judgment Day director James Cameron recalls Arnold Schwarzenegger initially not liking the twist of him playing a "good" terminator. Released in 1991, Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a follow-up to Cameron's original 1984 film. After Schwarzenegger's T-800 spends the entire first movie trying to kill Linda Hamilton's Sarah Conner, the sequel sees a new version of his T-800 return to protect her from the more dangerous T-1000 .
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT In a recent interview as part of the new Schwarzenegger Netflix docuseries Arnold , Cameron reveals that the Terminator 2: Judgment Day star originally wasn't totally onboard being a good T-800. The director explains that one of Schwarzenegger's central sticking points, hilariously, is that he didn't get to kill anyone.
"At first Arnold was absolutely against the idea. I go, 'What's the matter? You don't like it.’ He says, 'Jim, I don't kill anybody. Can I shoot them in the leg?’ I said, 'Yeah, lets just shoot 'em in the leg, how's that?' He goes, 'That's good.
In addition to meaning Schwarzenegger would once more get to play a central role in the film, his return also helps to highlight just how dangerous the T-1000 actually is. To have the robot that seemed impossible to kill in the first film struggle to get the upper hand on the T-1000 is a great way to up the stakes and make the forces of antagonism against Sarah even greater. It also helps to even the odds a little bit, with Sarah likely not able to defeat the T-1000 all on her own.
The T-800's return also gives some interesting depth to Sarah. It allows the film to explore the trauma she's still dealing with after the events of the first Terminator and, by the end of the movie, gives her something of a new sidekick. Although it's easy to understand why Schwarzenegger would have been hesitant about reversing elements that made the first movie such a success, Terminator 2: Judgment Day evidently made the right call by making the T-800 a hero.
