For subscribers: Someone, or a group of someones, is paying Arizona state Rep. Jake Hoffman more than $2 million to help make Kari Lake the Republican nominee for governor. But it is not clear who is doing so.
Both types of ads were ordered by a political action committee, Put Arizona First, which claims as its only donor a medical company whose owner denies making the contribution. Hoffman's company was first contracted by Put Arizona First on May 6 with an initial payment of more than a half-million dollars.
But the owner of a medical supply company with that name based in Orange County denies making that donation, or any political donation anywhere. One of the Republican primary races drawing Secure Arizona's dollars involves House Speaker Rusty Bowers, who. Secure Arizona has spent $63,000 in that race.
Hoffman’s firm, Rally Forge, was banned by Facebook in 2020 after the social media company determined Hoffman had hired teenagers to post disinformation under false identities. Records from Turning Point Action show that Hoffman was paid $1.8 million in 2020 for work involving digital media, social media and ad placement.
