While Kwanzaa reflects African themes and spirit, it is uniquely American, and a reflection of the Black experience in this country.
It’s not unusual for people, any people, to yearn for a unifying connection to their heritage. It is especially true for people whose ancestors were brutally taken from their native lands and who lost connections to rich cultures and ancient, cherished traditions.
Karenga infused his Kwanzaa creation with influences from the Ashanti and Zulu ethnic groups, using Swahili words to identify the days of celebration. Singing, dancing, storytelling, poetry, drummingSaturday’s Kwanzaa festival promises to have all in abundance. As we join our region’s African American community in celebrating the solid values Kwanzaa represents, let’s add two more –The Rev. Nathaniel and Patricia Gadsden are recipients of the PA Media Group’s 2022 Peace & Justice in PA Award.
