Violent clashes between federal officers and protesters have resulted in injuries on both sides.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler was caught in the crossfire on Wednesday night, explaining it was “hard to breathe” when he was tear-gassed after a meeting with protesters outside the courthouse.

McEnany responded to Wheeler’s accusations that federal officers’ responses were an “egregious overreaction,” calling the Democratic mayor “appalling” for “[standing] in the middle of a riot while violent protesters attacked a federal building.” Key Background The officers’ injuries were reportedly incurred Monday night when a crowd of around 1,000 protesters surrounded the federal courthouse. Richard Cline, the Federal Protective Service deputy director, told reporters during a Tuesday press conference that “glass bottles were thrown and lasers, which can cause permanent blindness” were shone in the eyes of officers putting out protester fires outside the courthouse.
