Luckily for New Zealand, their Prime Minister is a woman who knows when to call it quits. On 19 January, Labour party leader Jacinda Ardern announced that she would be standing down after five years.
“I’m leaving, because with such a privileged role comes responsibility – the responsibility to know when you are the right person to lead and also when you are not,” she said. “I know what this job takes. And I know that I no longer have enough in the tank to do it justice. It’s that simple.” First elected Prime Minister in 2017 at the age of 37 – making her the world’s youngest female head of state – Ardern has had a tough five years. In 2019, she had to deal with the Christchurch shooting, the deadliest in modern New Zealand history. On 15 March, a white supremacist walked into two mosques and killed 51 people and injured 40 others.
