Only Ward E reduced street sweeping, with the other wards contend with residents wary of dirtier streets.

Updated: Nov. 03, 2023, 5:41 p.m.Cars parked on a residential street in Downtown Jersey City on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023.Car owners in most areas of Downtown Jersey City have half of the street sweeping challenges of their peers in the rest of the city.

The city government’s method of implementing the pilot program is perhaps not commonly seen under Mayor Steve Fulop’s leadership. Meanwhile, the latest citywide parking-related initiative is a crackdown on vehicles that have more than $300 in outstanding fines. The city has begun booting the vehicles , a move expected to free up parking spaces since some vehicles are chronically left in the street in the same location.

Those in favor of the change see it as a chance to move their cars less frequently, while those against it or more hesitant worry that the streets will get dirtier, councilmembers said.Councilman Frank Gilmore, who represents Bergen-Lafayette, said he has requested to see the results of a survey about the pilot in Ward E so that he can present them to his constituents, where some people have been asking for the reduction.

Saleh said he held a community meeting last year where he opened a discussion about the pilot, and paused furtherDebris is already a concern in the Heights, he explained, and he has been working to tackle that issue, in part because it could mean an easier transition to single-day street sweeping. Litter-related policies he is considering advocating for are increased fines and a requirement that businesses pay off waste-related fines before obtaining permits.

“Instead of twice a week they should go once a week,” Kapadia said. “That’s another main issue, that people have to keep moving around.”
