The Browns' Hall of Fame running back was one of the greatest to play the game. His stats backed that up.
Brown currently ranks 30th in NFL history with 2,359 career rush attempts, just behind O.J. Simpson and Matt Forte. When he retired, that figure was the highest in NFL history.Brown currently ranks 11th in all-time rushing yards with 12,312, just behind Tony Dorsett and just ahead of Marshall Faulk. The only players above him in NFL history are: Smith, Walter Payton, Frank Gore, Barry Sanders, Adrian Peterson, Curtis Martin, LaDainian Tomlinson, Jerome Bettis, Eric Dickerson and Dorsett.
When Brown retired, he was the league’s all-time leading rusher. That mark stood until the final games of Dorsett’s career. But in terms of yards-per-game, Brown is the only running back in NFL history to average more than 100 yards per game. The next closest player was Sanders, who ended his career with 99.8 yards rushing.
In terms of yards-per-attempt, Cleveland has had some elite company at the top. Brown ranks tied for sixth all-time with current Browns running back Nick Chubb with 5.2 yards-per-carry, and just behind Jamaal Charles and former Cleveland great Marion Motley . Brown’s 1963 season where he tallied 1,863 ranks 13th all-time for a single season, and was not beaten for a decade until Simpson rushed for 2,003 yards with the Bills.
