Victims' Commissioner Helen Newlove, whose husband Garry was killed after confronting drunken youths, is campaigning to change the law
It started with beer bottles being thrown into his garden at his Cheshire home. But when Garry Newlove, who was a sales manager originally from Salford, confronted the gang of drunken youths who were defacing his wife’s car, it changed his family's lives forever.
“Mr daughters were traumatised, hadn't slept and there was a person there who the police had advised,” Baroness Newlove says, looking back to that tragic day. “The first words when she met my daughter were: ‘Well of course, everybody's innocent until proven guilty.’ Baroness Newlove says she sees victims of murder, rape, domestic violence, antisocial behaviour - and they all tell her they “just want somebody to believe them and listen to them”. “How sad is that? All they ask for is that they get the support. It breaks my heart to say that they thank me for listening to them,” she says.
Baroness Newlove has seen cases of ASB such as a family with a sickly child suffering constant fumes coming through their vents from neighbours smoking weed. Another case was a young lady who had renovated her house after she inherited some money from her Nana and a family on her road smashed plant pots on her property because they thought she parked in the wrong place.
“You can tick a box, move your spreadsheet columns, you can say you’re doing good in one area, but if you don’t understand and empathise with that individual instead of assuming, you really are in the wrong job and there is a system that’s not working to protect those who need protecting.”
