China Reported Its First Case of a Person Infected With H3N8 Bird Flu

He developed a fever and other symptoms on April 5 and was hospitalized five days later. Test results later confirmed that he had the H3N8 strain of bird flu.
Health officials noted that no human cases of H3N8 have been previously reported. They also said that this is part of an “occasional” bird-to-human transmission and that the risk of a large-scale epidemic is low. Still, Chinese health officials advised the public to avoid contact with sick and dead poultry and to try to avoid coming into contact with live poultry as much as possible. They also suggest that people pay attention to their dietary hygiene and separate raw and cooked food during the cooking process. And, if someone develops symptoms, they should wear a mask and seek medical attention ASAP.
