Nearly 700 have been arrested in protests in the Ecuadorian capital as President Lenin Moreno tries to quell the violence.
Protesters have surrounded and entered the National Assembly building in Quito, Ecuador, as President Lenin Moreno attempts to quell unrest over an end to fuel subsidies from outside the capital.
"These incidents of vandalism and violence demonstrate there is some organized political intention to destabilize the government and break constitutional law, break democratic order," Moreno claimed during Monday's televised announcement."They are foreign individuals, external and paid." Correa, from his self-imposed exile in Belgium, denied the allegations."They are such liars.... They say I am so powerful that with an iPhone from Brussels I could lead the protests," he told Reuters.
