Liverpool fans partied inside Old Trafford as Manchester United were humiliated 5-0 on their own turf one year ago

Liverpool enjoyed one of the greatest away days in their history two years ago when Jurgen Klopp's side travelled to Old Trafford and beat Manchester United 5-0.

So any kind of stuffy, scruffy result which sees travelling Kopites able to head back down the East Lancs Road with three points in their back pockets is always going to be celebrated long and loud. There was a different and very real confidence evident in the 3,000 or so Liverpool fans in the Old Trafford’s away corner ahead of kick off this time.

For whatever reason, the authority and assurance which has characterised so many triumphs during this golden era often seemed to evaporate as soon as Klopp’s men approached Salford Quays and, although only one match had been actually been lost, there had been a number of unsatisfactory draws with the only victory being the vital 4-2 behind-closed-doors triumph in May which breathed new life into the Reds’ Champions League hopes.

Less than 10 minutes later as Diogo Jota slid home the second from close range, the intensity of the celebrations had a different hue as laughter became one of the dominant characteristics, partly due to how easy the Reds were making things look and also due to the prospect of handing out a real hammering the likes of which United, even when at their most dominant, had been unable to inflict on Liverpool.

I never thought I’d see another half-time interval like during the Europa League tie five years ago when Philippe Coutinho craftily chipped the away goal on the stroke of the whistle which in one fell swoop ended United’s hopes of a second-leg comeback but history was now repeating itself with the away end in full on party mode, friends and strangers alike greeting each other with bouncing hugs and beatific smiles of sheer disbelief.

But this is not a day for recriminations and in some ways what happened in the final half hour or so was as insulting and as damaging to United’s psyche as another couple of goals stuck past David de Gea. By early April even Champions League qualification was in jeopardy and, with United again closing in on another title, we travelled in hope more than expectation, worst fears becoming reality within four minutes when Sami Hyypia was sent off for bringing down Ruud van Nistelrooy with the Dutchman slamming home the resulting penalty to precipitate a tortuous 4-0 home win.
