Counties from Gainsville to Laredo, known as the blue spine, are changing the face of Texas politics.in the corridor of counties that snakes down the state along Interstate 35 from Gainesville in Cooke County in the north to Laredo in Webb County on the Mexican border.
Over the past decade, counties in the Blue Spine have been growing more Democratic. In the 2018 Senate race, O’Rourke took 9 counties in the spine, including Bexar and Hays which flipped from the previous 2014 Senate election. The animation shows how blue city centers are spreading outward, grabbing more suburban and exurban voters each year.
Population growth in Spine counties was robust between 2010 and 2020. According to the Census, those 21 counties added 2.18 million people, nearly half the total population growth of the entire state. This means that 8% of Texas’ 254 counties were responsible for 45% of the population growth. And since 2016, Texas has added nearly 2 million voters. Just over half of those votersIn 2014, U.S. Sen.
