"In the immediate lead-up to the trip I admit I got pretty anxious, especially about the logistics of getting around in the face of MTR closures," Sanders told CNN Travel.
With the MTR down, Sanders and her boyfriend took a taxi from Hong Kong Station to their hotel in Causeway Bay. Luckily, as most Hong Kong taxis do not accept credit cards, they had gotten cash from an ATM at the airport. When they start, authorities have been known to quickly shut down train stations, while buses have been forced to negotiate crowds of protesters before they've had a chance to reroute.
If police start asking you questions, it's important to know that Hong Kong law allows police to stop anyone on the street and ask for official identification.Once Sanders and her boyfriend got to the Peak, it was relatively quiet -- a surprise considering it was"Golden Week," a popular time under normal circumstances for mainland Chinese tourists to visit Hong Kong.
