York Open Studios welcomes art lovers to the workspace of inspiring Yorkshire creatives this month - time to bag a unique piece.
After an evening class in textiles, she continued with her passion and will be one of the new artists exhibiting as part of the York Open Studios event this month.
She uses reclaimed and repurposed fabrics and all manner of papers, including maps, books, and vintage documents. These materials are often altered through painting and mono-printing before being torn, layered and pieced into seascapes, landscapes, and abstract works, often embellished with hand- and machine-stitching, and through the addition of text and ephemera.
The element of welcoming visitors into the inner sanctum of the artists and crafts’ peoples’ work spaces is special. Jo Bagshaw, committee member and jeweller adds, ‘Watching artists at work, observing their methods is intriguing and a real insight into their artistic lives and resultant work. Other new artists include Luke Downing a writer and filmmaker who has worked in the industry for over a decade. In his day job, he works for Channel 4, and in his spare time is the founder and editor of The York Journal - a print publication of short fiction, poetry and literary essays. His recent series of film poetry combines his love of the written word with his passion for the moving image.
